Some of the Republicans in Congress have just given up on being part of any real dialogue about the nation's issues. Their new "budget," announced yesterday with a numberless "blueprint," recommends the biggest tax cut for the rich in our nation's history, to a top rate of 25%. Since Bush's cuts did such a great job for the economy, I guess. And various Republicans want to battle recession with a spending freeze, which is pretty much like fighting fire with gasoline.
But as disengaged or downright destructive as these people are, they don't hold a candle to the genuinely certifiable Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN), who is now calling for revolution.
Bachmann's insane ranting on Sean Hannity's radio show included these gems:
"If Tim Geithner is successful under President Obama, and they move
us to an international currency, then we have no
hope of standing on our own as a sovereign nation with our own economic
system. It's over. We can't do that."
There has been, of course, no indication that President Obama is interested in an international currency, and when asked about it (by Fox News) at his recent press conference, he specifically denied any such intention, with one of those "I can't believe you're even asking me this" answers. But I guess that didn't get through Bachmann's tinfoil helmet.
"Economics works equally in any country.
Where freedom is tried, the people rejoice. But where tyranny is
enforced upon the people, as Barack Obama is doing, the people suffer
and mourn."
She doesn't define Obama's "tyranny," but if you're looking at the world through loon-colored glasses, maybe it's just obvious.
Finally, there was this exchange with Hannity, who might be angling for the rubber room next to hers (with Glenn Beck on the other side):
Bachmann: Do we get into an inner tube and float 90 miles to some
free country? There is no free country for us to repair to. That's why
it's up to us now. The founders gave everything they had to give us
this freedom. Now it's up to us to give everything we can to make sure
that our kids are free, too. It's that serious. I hate to be dramatic,
but--
Hannity: It's not -- you are not overstating this case,
Congresswoman, and you don't need to apologize for it. And as a matter
of fact, it's refreshing. And I can tell you, all around this country,
on 535 of the best radio stations in this country, people are saying
"Amen," "Hallelujah", "where have you been?"
If they were both just radio idiots, it wouldn't be so bad. But she's an elected (and reelected) member of the United States Congress. Shouldn't there be some sort of basic mental function test for that job?
